Description of Services

ICA – Laws Legal Institute hosts a top-rated U.S.-based legal research network that provides early and mid-career legal scholars with cross-disciplinary research programs, mentorship from leading legal practitioners, transformative academic events, publishing fellowships and collaborative projects, and public legal education programs. Participation is by application or invitation only. Institute coordinators and volunteers aim to make the Institute’s activities a supportive home for a network of legal research leaders and colleagues nationwide. Select services, workshops, programs and institutes may require prior registration, notification/acceptance into selected programs, and/or adherence to additional guidelines.

Eligibility of Participants

Our leadership briefs and services are principally for early and mid-career legal academics, seasoned legal scholars, effective mentors and U.S. academic institutions. Participation in ICA – Laws Legal Institute programs may require user applications, credentials or invitations. The Institute reserves the right to determine eligibility of participation, to accept and/or decline user applications and use of and/or attendance at particular events or programs at its sole discretion. All participants must observe and comply with, as applicable, program-specific rules, codes of conduct and relevant institutional policies or standards.

User Accounts and Registration

Some portions of the ICA – Laws Legal Institute website and Services may require that you establish an account. When you establish an account, you agree to provide accurate, current and complete information. You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your account password and account number, and you assume full responsibility for all activities that occur under your account. The Institute may suspend or terminate any account that it believes, in its sole action and discretion, is in violation of these Terms and/or the laws.

Ownership and Intellectual Property Rights

All material published on the ICA – Laws Legal Institute website (this includes, but is not limited to: text, graphics, logos, research papers, program materials, event descriptions, images, audio files, video files and software) is the property of ICA – Laws Legal Institute or its content suppliers unless otherwise stated. You warrant that you are the owner or have the necessary rights to submit such content and that your submission does not infringe or violate the rights of others. The Institute shall have the option to monitor, edit or remove any User Generated Content at its discretion.

Academic Honesty and Research Integrity

ICA – Laws Legal Institute espouses and follows the highest principles of academic integrity and research ethics. Every member, contributor or user should act according to ethical principles in research and scholarship, as well as in teaching and professional engagement. Plagiarism, misrepresentation, falsification of data, and similar activities are not tolerated and can lead to suspension from programs, withdrawal of privileges to participate in ICA – Laws Legal Institute events, and/or notice thereof to relevant academic institutions or authorities.

Mentorship and Collaborative Networking

ICA – LLI participants are expected to treat one another with courtesy and to collaborate in a constructive and professional manner. Especially mentors and fellows are required to conduct themselves in accordance with the code of conduct. Diversity and inclusion are values to be upheld and supported; all activities will be organized and conducted in an equitable, respectful research environment. Harassment, discrimination, bullying, and abusive behaviour are not tolerated and can result in programs and events withdrawal.

The ICA – Laws Legal Institute website may contain links to other third-party websites or resources that are operated by other people or organizations. The links are for your convenience only and do not constitute or imply endorsement, support, or approval by the Institute. ICA – Laws Legal Institute has no control over the content of such third party sites or resources. Likewise, access to and use of such third party sites or resources by you is made at your own risk and is subject to the applicable third party site or resource terms of use and privacy policies.

Event Participation and Participation Policies

Participation in ICA – Laws Legal Institute events, conferences, workshops, and programs (“the event(s)”) is subject to event specific policies and codes of conduct. Participation at the events is based on the requirement that the conduct of all participants remain professional and polite throughout events including but not limited to, respecting the diverse cultural and personal backgrounds, points of view, and perspectives of other events participants. The Institute may deny, withdraw or terminate participation to any event for improper, inappropriate or disruptive conduct or for failure to comply with these Terms of Use.

Governing Law and Jurisdiction

These Terms of Use shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of California, United States, without regard to its conflict of laws principles. Any dispute arising under or relating to the Terms of Use, the website or the Services shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of, and venue in, the state and federal courts located in Los Angeles County, California.

Dispute Resolution Mechanism

In the case of any dispute, controversy or claim arising out of or relating to these Terms of Use, the use of the ICA – Laws Legal Institute website or ICA’s services, the parties shall first try to resolve the matter in an informal, amicable manner through good faith negotiations. If negotiating this matter informally is not possible, then the dispute shall be settled by means of final and binding arbitration, in Los Angeles, California, under the rules of the American Arbitration Association. Each party bears its own costs and attorneys’ fees, except as otherwise awarded by the arbitrator.

Program Applications and Selection

Participation in ICA – Laws Legal Institute programs is accomplished through a competitive process subject to application or invitation. All applicants must provide complete and accurate information including academic and educational qualifications and plans for research. The Institute reserves the right to verify all information submitted and further reserves the right to reject any application, for whatever reason, including but not limited to incomplete submissions, ineligibility based on stated academic qualifications or research programs, etc. Acceptance decision and conditions are final and not subject to review.

Behavior and Participation Code of Conduct

All who participate in ICA – Laws Legal Institute programs, workshops, events and online in any way are required to act with the utmost professionalism, integrity, collegiality and respect. ICA – Laws participants are required to abide by all applicable laws and institutional policies, and by any program-specific code of conduct. Harassing or otherwise abusive conduct, discrimination, bullying or inappropriate behaviour will not be tolerated. Such conduct may result in immediate dismissal from programs and events.

Confidentiality and Non-Disclosure

As part of your participation in any program, event or project undertaken jointly with the Institute or program participants, you may receive information from ICA – Laws Legal Institute or other participants that belongs to such other participant(s) and is confidential or proprietary. You will not use, disclose or share such information except as authorized in connection with your participation in Institute activities unless you have obtained express written permission of the party disclosing that information.

Funding and Cost Participation and Sponsorship

Generally, participation in programs of the ICA – Laws Legal Institute will receive the sponsorship or support of host institutions and research grants. Fees for participation, travel and accommodation may be covered or discounted for selected fellows and mentors. There are no individual fees for participation for qualified candidates. Information on funding, sponsorship and reimbursement will be provided to participants after acceptance to a particular program or specific event. Participants are responsible for costs not specifically covered by the Institute.

Publications and Research Findings

ICA – Laws Legal Institute may publish or distribute the outcomes of research, event recordings or program materials, for educational and scholarly use or general benefit. By agreeing to participate in the Institute’s programmes you agree to the publication and distribution and public communication of deliverables, the presentations or recorded research outcomes, upon appropriate acknowledgement provided that you comply with applicable confidentiality arrangements.

Communications and Subscription to Mailing List

By adding your name to our mailing list, submitting an application or participating in an Institute program, you authorize ICA – Laws Legal Institute to contact you regarding program information, event invitations, research participation and other news. You may unsubscribe to our mailing list at any time by following the opt-out instructions in our email correspondence or by writing to [email protected]. We respect your privacy and do not sell or otherwise share your contact details with anyone outside of ICA – Laws Legal Institute other than as set forth in our Privacy Policy.
