National Level Legal Research Network
ICA – Laws Legal Institute is an unparalleled venue for early- to mid-career legal scholars to build vital and lasting professional relationships with peers and mentors across the U.S. Our national network is the very foundation of our purpose, providing opportunities for collaboration, sharing of resources, and most importantly, exchanging pathbreaking developments in legal scholarship. Through plenary and structured networking sessions, peer-led forums, and online communities, participants tap into a world of expertise, actively build new research collaborations, and stay at the cutting edge of legal scholarship.
Cross-Disciplinary, Paradigm-Changing Research Programs
Our core programs work to integrate the disciplines of law with those of social sciences, technology, and policy, fostering rigorous cross-discipline approaches to U.S. legal scholarship. Participants are fielded into intensive multi-day workshops and collaborative projects that push the boundaries of research, challenge traditional methodologies, illuminate current legal issues, and expand upon existing discussions involving law’s brittleness and fluidity. These workshops and projects are developed in collaboration with prominent U.S. institutions and are advised by distinguished lecturer-mentors associated with them.
Mentoring by Top U.S. Legal Scholars and Practitioners
One of our hallmarks is direct access to mentorship from some of the most distinguished legal professionals and scholars in the country. Participating scholars benefit from our mentor network, which includes senior legal scholars, federal and state court judges, seasoned practitioners, and thought leaders from preeminent law schools across the nation. In one-on-one meetings, group mentoring programs, and career-specific workshops, scholars receive individualized support in connection with research projects, publication plans, academic leadership, and professional development. The mentoring experience is fully designed to enable each scholar to achieve new professional heights in their legal career.
Annual and Semi-Annual Legal Academic Conferences
ICA – Laws Legal Institute delivers high-profile events that attract the top minds of the world of U.S. law. Our premier conferences-particularly our ICA 3 conference series in major city locations including Los Angeles and New York-provide a platform for delegates to present their research, debate in open forums, and network with peers across the U.S. and globally. Not only do we host annual and bi-annual conferences, but we also run niche workshops, public lectures, and roundtables on emerging topics. These events ensure our members have the opportunity to inspire, challenge, and foster new alliances and collaborations in law.
Programs for Legal Research Fellows and Mentors
The Institute’s Legal Research Fellows Program is a competitive program offering exceptional early and mid-career scholars the opportunity for a year-long immersive research experience. Fellows receive generous stipends, along with travel and accommodation subsidies, and the use of our host institutions’ facilities and resources. Fellows are also provided with a mentor who regularly advises and critiques their work throughout the fellowship period, aiming to produce valuable research output and assist with overall career development. The Institute’s Mentor Program regularly encourages seasoned legal practitioners’ involvement by promoting a multi-generational exchange of knowledge and expertise.
Assistance with Collaborative and Interdisciplinary Research Projects
ICA – Laws Legal Institute funds and actively supports collaborative research initiatives that transcend traditional academic disciplines. Ranging from legal technology and privacy data, constitutional law to access to justice, the diversity of our project portfolio reflects the exciting, multiform challenges that define U.S. law today. We support project development, provide research assistance, promote cross-collaboration between disciplines, and support dissemination and publications. Participants benefit from an enriching environment that promotes creativity, innovation, and measurable impact.
Public Legal Education and Research Dissemination
Because our mission goes beyond the university walls, ICA – Laws Legal Institute partners with universities throughout the province to host public education sessions, interactive art exhibits, and community programming to disseminate our research findings to wider audiences. We also produce policy briefing papers, op-eds, and multimedia learning tools to improve the general public’s understanding of law-related issues, as well as to demonstrate the significance of our scholars’ research work. We translate high-stakes legal research into accessible formats to inform and educate policymakers, practitioners, students, and the general public, fostering an informed and active civic sphere.
